CBT

CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a practical and short-term type of psychotherapy, useful in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress conditions.

How CBT works

It works by helping clients focus on the present, on the problems that come up in day-to-day life. It aids clients in identifying, questioning and changing their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs surrounding specific emotions and behaviours that cause them distress. They learn to develop personal coping strategies so they can solve current problems and change unhelpful patterns, behaviours and emotional regulation.

CBT Treatment

The basic steps in a CBT assessment include:

  • Identifying critical behaviours
  • Determining whether those behaviours are excesses or deficits
  • Evaluating them for frequency, duration, or intensity to obtain a baseline

Successful CBT sessions include a healthy collaboration between the counsellor and the individual. This therapy also involves identifying the problem, establishing attainable goals, empathic communication, frequent feedback, reality checks, homework assignments, and teaching individuals to use learned skills to promote positive behavioural change and growth. Eventually, this therapy aims to guide you to apply the skills you’ve learned during treatment to your daily life.

Again, this isn’t a treatment prescribed to every client and will only be recommended depending on the client’s needs.
